Social Media can be an amazing tool, even for our youngest learners. Nelson Mandela stated: "Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world". The tools available to make transformative change in the educational world of today's children are amazing. When coming out of my education program in just 2005, I could have never imagined using a mobile technology device (iPad) as a foundational aspect of my first grade classroom. I would have laughed when imagining my young students creating digital artifacts ,such as movies, about their understandings and wonderings which they would then share with student's across the world through blogging and Twitter. I mean it's called Twitter. Who could have imagined?!? As educators we have to be life long learners. That is a term that I have used in many interviews. It is almost a required term to drop in today's hiring process. Technology is certainly a part of an educator's lifelong growth, and social media is a pivotal tool and instructional practice in today's classrooms. Students need to feel ownership of their learning, and sharing and collaborating are crucial skills in that process. Why wouldn't we utilize tools that make students authentic audience...the world!!
My expectation for this dive into the deep end of social media learning is to learn how to use social media to make a bigger impact in the educational world both for my future students and for myself. Blogging and sharing is a passion of mine and I truly want to improve so I can share my passions with more educators around the world. I am looking forward to a new educational learning journey this fall and I hope you see the impact I hope to create on this blog and beyond.
I am enrolled in EDTECH 501 and 502 this semester, which will be my first in my Graduate School adventure. This week was challenging to say the least. In 501, I had to familiarize myself with a new blog/website creator and then create an online learning log, which you can find here! Then I had to read up on the definition of Educational Technology and create an original graphic about the definition. Keep in mind that I am not a graphic designer in any way. I can barely illustrate my writer's workshop stories in front of my first graders. Even though I was weary, both assignments turned out to be fun and engaging! My graphic is the image posted above.
In 502, we had to HTML code a basic website using Dreamweaver. This sounds simple but it was not. It is not an exaggeration to say that coding is like learning another language. You are trying to speak to a computer who can not interpret or infer anything you are trying to say. It has to be straight to the point. It has to be clear and concise, which is something I struggle with daily in talking to real people. LOL. I was up till midnight 2 nights in a row watching videos and reading how to code the site. When I finally validated it with no errors and uploaded it to the assignment showcase page, I literally jumped up and threw my hands in the air. It was such a rush! My life outside the Grad School bubble was chugging along as well. It was my first full week of teaching and I also had my school's Parent Night, which takes a lot of preparation. Dillon is almost a month into Kindergarten and we are very proud of him. We know the academics are going to take some time to develop this year, so we just want him to come home happy. Happiness is what we are getting. He loves school and his teacher. He woke up this morning asking to go to school and he was a little bummed to learn that it was Saturday.
Come Monday, it will be rewind and repeat. I hope I can post next Saturday with the same feeling of accomplishment!
