Take Aways From Morning #1
I flew the redeye from Honolulu to Atlanta last night! Pickle had an upset stomach the night before I left so I did not have any sleep going into the flight. An unexpected BONUS: I slept the whole flight! I fell asleep during the hilarious scene in Bridesmaids where Kristen Wiig is kicking the sh*t out of a giant cookie and woke up with 40 minutes to go in the flight!
Once we landed, I was able to cab to the hotel, check in early (DOUBLE BONUS), shower (TRIPLE BONUS), and head over to HachEducation's Unconference 2014 with time to spare!
So here are my take aways of ISTE thus far:
-People are so stinking friendly!! People have no problem introducing themselves while switching website addresses and twitter handles.
-The teachers who attend these conference are innovators. It is so awesome to hear about all the innovative technology integration that is happening in the U.S and the tools available to make that innovation possible!
My Unconference goes till this afternoon and then I get meet up with some of my Punahou peeps or shall I say tweeps!! I am on a quest to: A) Eat Chicken and Waffles and B) Find a gay bar so I can take a selfie with a divalicious, fabulous gay black man who walks around wearing high heels!! I might need to rest tonight and catch up on sleep but we shall see how far my adrenaline gets me!! I will make A and B happen!!
Mahalo for reading and stay tuned!
I have been using Explain Everything on my iPad to start to build an online/listening library for Pickle. There are a lot of reading apps on the iPad but being the controlling first grade parent that I am, I really want to build a rich listening library for Pickle with out favorite stories. The features of Explain Everything also lend themselves to modeling great reading practices. You can use a pointer to encourage your child to follow along while you read aloud. Pickle is in the pretend reading stage so using the pointer and drawing attention to the text is a perfect feature for where we are at in his reading development. The whole project took us 10 minutes to create and record. If we record 2-3 a week, we can have a decent listening library happening by the end of summer. Thank you for reading! I will let you know if I can sustain this process and how much Pickle benefits from it!!
Our Final Products (including a story we created focused on the color red) **Watch to the end for a little "Pickle Bonus"
Here are some tip photos I made with Skitch!
Start by taking a picture of a page, add a slide, take a picture of the next page. (This will be the longest part of the whole experience)
Hit the plus button in the left hand side and choose "new picture" to add pictures to slides.
You add another slide by hitting the plus sign next to the slide organizer.
You record by hitting the red record bottom. You can hit pause or hit the red button again when you are done.
I am getting excited about presenting at Schools of the Future in November. I am in the beginning stages of crating my presentation. The focus of my presentation will using technology to enhance your class's storytelling adventures. This past school year my class became super proficient in "publishing" their finished writing pieces in the iPad app Explain Everything. They would then import those stories to their Kidblog! It truly was a great experience to see just how capable kids have become with operating technology. Below are some videos of my student's explaining the process. It is super cool to hear them teach us! Writer's Workshop in our class become super interactive and our new found "publishing" technique really encourages the children to take ownership of their writing!
